For those of you feeling strangled by other people, thinking they're going to instantly call your OC a Mary Sue, I recommend you watch this video below. I've always seen people in real life, but mostly on DA, trying to make characters that are "relatable" to the audience. More often than not, this results in a weak character... Why? Because these authors and artists will end up going for particular traits in a character that only the audience and themselves can "relate" to (particularly the character's flaws... MAJOR ones usually. :P)

This is unhealthy for the creative process because it kneecaps the artist's creativity in not only making a fantastic design, but a fantastic personality and overall character as well. I think this little message of mine AND this video from Jerry Peet goes out to EVERYONE who feels suppressed by trying to make "relatable" characters, which in turn results in the imprisonment of how truly free and far the imagination SHOULD be allowed to fly.

I couldn't agree more. Characters should be made the way they were meant to, not how the audience wants them to.
